Street maintenance

On this page

Street maintenance is aimed at keeping the streets of Uusikaupunki in a good condition while meeting traffic requirements.

Winter maintenance is carried out based on a street classification system, in which carriageways are divided into three and light traffic channels into two maintenance categories.

In addition, there are also laws that stipulate the obligations of the municipality and property owners regarding the maintenance and cleaning of streets.

Maintenance classification of carriageways

Carriageways maintained by the municipality are divided into three maintenance categories. Each category determines the targets and timeframe for the maintenance of carriageways within them.

Clearing snow from carriageways

Target maintenance level (class 1-3 and target):

  1. Dry loose snow on average < 4 cm
  2. Dry loose snow on average < 6 cm
  3. Dry loose snow on average < 8 cm

On public holidays, roads corresponding to the maintenance category I may be maintained according to the regulations of maintenance category II.

Timeframe (category and target):

  1. As soon as possible after the state of the road has fallen under the required quality standard, or so that the street is clear before peak traffic hours. During continuous snowfall, roads must be kept in a trafficable condition.
  2. After falling below the expected quality standard, usually after snowfall has ended. If snowfall continues for a long time, snow will also be cleared during the snowfall when the state of the road has fallen below the expected quality standard.
  3. After falling below the acceptable quality standard, usually no later than the following day after snowfall.

Clearance of sleet from carriageways

The quality standard also applies to the removal of wet snow and snow and ice slush that has stuck to the road surface after it has softened with the rising temperature.

  1. As soon as possible after the state of the road has fallen under the required quality standard, or so that the street is cleared before peak traffic hours.
  2. Once the state of the road has fallen below the target level, the aim is to clean the street within the same day.
  3. Usually during the same year in which the target level was subceeded.

Target maintenance level (class 1-3 and target):

  1. Slush on avarage < 3 cm
  2. Slush on avarage < 5 cm
  3. Slush on avarage < 7 cm

Maintenance classification for light traffic channels
